Understanding Gamification in the Workplace

“Gamification can be defined as the usage of game mechanics in non-game business contexts to develop customer experience." (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0001691825009722)

Deloitte implemented a gamified learning platform called the Deloitte Leadership Academy. This platform uses gamification techniques to engage employees in leadership training. Participants earn badges for completing courses and can track their progress on leaderboards. As a result, Deloitte reported a significant increase in course completion rates and overall engagement.

Before even starting the program leaders are introduced to the academy and how to customize the their learning pathway. Then Deloitte then applies the principles of gamification and behavioral science to motivate learners toachieve their learning goals. For each milestone you achieve you receive badges, which are achieved by reaching certain milestones.

Another example of this at workplace shoutouts. Some companies, have incorporated the shoutout culture as an incentive, which has increased participation and understanding of core values and mission.

Why Gamification Matters

  1. Increased Engagement: Gamification taps into the natural human desire for competition and achievement. By introducing game-like elements, employees are more likely to engage with training programs, performance evaluations, and other HR initiatives. Lets say for example, that you create an incentive for locations to complete an employee survey. The location with the highest participation gets a pizza party. This does two things, it shows that as a company you value and want to hear employees opinions and you want to reward employees for reaching those goals.

  2. Enhanced Learning: Traditional training methods can be tedious and uninspiring. Gamification makes learning more interactive and enjoyable, leading to better retention of information and skills.

  3. Improved Performance: By setting clear goals and providing immediate feedback through gamified systems, employees are motivated to perform better and strive for excellence.

  4. Stronger Team Dynamics: Gamification can foster collaboration and teamwork by encouraging employees to work together to achieve common goals.

Implementing Gamification Techniques in HR

To effectively incorporate gamification into your HR strategy, consider the following techniques:

1. Skill Trees

In JRPGs your often presented with a points system where you can modify the character as you go through the story. This is both nerve racking and exciting as the decision can change the entire journey.

In the world of employment, as an employee earn points for completing tasks, attending training sessions, or slaying dragons. This system can be tied to rewards, such as gift cards, extra time off, or recognition in company communications.

Example: A company might award points for every training module completed, with a leaderboard displayed in the break room to encourage friendly competition among employees. I have seen systems like this work with companies like AwardCo. I think it is important that you're intentional with the system and communication and not let it become a barrier to something that is meant to be a celebration. Make sure to work with your payroll team and leadership to ensure that it is working

2. Introduce Badges and Achievements

Badges serve as visual representations of accomplishments. By awarding badges for various achievements—such as completing a project, mastering a new skill, or participating in team-building activities—employees can showcase their successes.

Example: Maybe your organizations HRIS or communication allows for shoutouts. An organization could create a "Skill Master" badge or trophy for employees who complete a series of training courses or provide professional development, motivating others to pursue similar achievements and creating an environment of teaching and learning.

3. Develop Challenges and Competitions

Organize challenges or competitions that encourage employees to work towards specific goals. These can be team-based or individual challenges, fostering collaboration and a sense of community.

Example: A sales team could participate in a monthly competition where the top performers receive prizes, driving motivation and performance.

4. Feedback and Respawns?

Feedback is one of the biggest things you can receive and give. It is definitely one of the hardest lessons to learn as an employee, manager, leader of leaders, and organization is how to give and receive feedback. Whenever I have been taught how to play a video game (most recently Hades 2 IFKYK) that failing is part of the learning process. As many times as I have respawned in Hades 2, I finally was able to beat the game after an untold number of runs, and it was glorious.

This same logic though can apply flipped. If you're someone that is wanting to prevent failure and are giving advice to a manager or leader as an employee that communication is equally as important.

Overcoming Challenges in Gamification

While gamification offers numerous benefits, it is essential to address potential challenges:

1. Avoiding Over-Competition

While competition can be motivating, excessive competition may lead to stress and unhealthy rivalry among employees. Strive for a balance between competition and collaboration.

2. Ensuring Inclusivity

Not all employees may respond positively to gamification. Ensure that your gamified systems are inclusive and cater to different personality types and preferences.

3. Measuring Effectiveness

Establish clear metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of your gamification strategies. Regularly assess employee engagement, performance, and satisfaction to make necessary adjustments.

Best Practices for Gamification in HR

To maximize the effectiveness of gamification in your HR strategy, consider these best practices:

  1. Align with Organizational SMART Goals: Ensure that your gamification initiatives align with your organization's overall objectives and values.

  2. Involve Employees in Design: Engage employees in the design process to create gamified systems that resonate with them and meet their needs.

  3. Provide Clear Instructions: Clearly communicate the rules and objectives of gamified initiatives to avoid confusion and ensure participation.

  4. Celebrate Achievements: Recognize and celebrate employee achievements to reinforce the value of gamification and motivate continued participation.

  5. Iterate and Improve: Continuously gather feedback and make improvements to your gamification strategies based on employee input and performance data.

Conclusion

Gamification in the Workplace has the potential to revolutionize your HR strategy by making processes more engaging, interactive, and effective. By implementing techniques such as points systems, badges, challenges, and leaderboards, you can foster a motivated workforce that is eager to learn and perform. As you embark on this journey, remember to align your gamification efforts with your organizational goals, involve employees in the design process, and continuously iterate based on feedback. By doing so, you will not only enhance employee engagement but also create a thriving workplace culture that drives success.
